The Technique

Tui Na: Over 4,000 Years of History

The name Tui Na comes from the Chinese and captures the vigorous nature of this healing system: “Tui” means to push and “Na” means to grasp firmly. One of the oldest therapeutic modalities in the world, Tui Na massage predates acupuncture itself — its origins traced to China’s Shang Dynasty, over four millennia ago.

This massage is grounded in the same theoretical framework as all Traditional Chinese Medicine: the theories of Qi (vital energy), Xue (blood), Zang Fu (internal organs) and Jing Luo (meridians and collaterals). When these systems are in balance, the body thrives. When they are obstructed or deficient, discomfort, pain and illness emerge.

Tui Na is far more than a relaxation massage. It is a complete therapeutic system — a medicine practised with the hands — that can be applied as a standalone treatment or as a powerful complement to acupuncture, herbal medicine and other TCM modalities.

Mechanism

How Does Tui Na Work?

Using different parts of the hands — fingers, palms, knuckles, forearms and elbows — and always according to the client’s specific condition, the therapist performs a range of precise techniques directly on the meridians, acupuncture points and other parts of the body. This exterior action profoundly affects the interior: it unblocks the meridians, promotes the free circulation of Qi and blood, regulates the functions of the internal organs, and lubricates tendons, joints and bones.

01

Personalised Diagnosis

Every session begins with a TCM assessment — tongue, pulse and clinical history — to identify the energetic patterns underlying the client’s condition. The technique and pressure applied are always tailored to this diagnosis.

02

Working from Outside In

Unlike superficial relaxation massage, Tui Na acts on the deep structures — meridians, organs and connective tissue. It both prevents and treats conditions, improving physical and psychological wellbeing simultaneously.

03

Complement to TCM

Tui Na is particularly powerful when combined with acupuncture — the needles open the meridians while the massage sustains and deepens the therapeutic effect. It can also be used alone as a complete treatment in its own right.

Benefits

What Can Tui Na Massage Do For You?

Tui Na acts simultaneously on the physical, energetic and emotional dimensions of the person. Its therapeutic scope is broad — from acute musculoskeletal conditions to chronic systemic imbalances — making it one of the most versatile tools in the Traditional Chinese Medicine practitioner’s repertoire.

Mind, Body and Emotions

Tui Na promotes the balance of mind, body and emotions — addressing the deep interconnection between physical tension and emotional state that is central to Chinese Medicine’s understanding of health. Anxiety, irritability and mental fatigue respond particularly well to Tui Na protocols that calm the Shen (spirit).

Vital Energy (Qi)

Tui Na strengthens the body’s vital energy — tonifying Qi deficiencies that manifest as chronic fatigue, low immunity or poor recovery. By stimulating the flow through the meridians, it restores the body’s natural capacity for self-regulation and regeneration.

Immune System

Regular Tui Na boosts the immune system by strengthening Wei Qi — the defensive energy that circulates on the body’s surface. This makes it particularly valuable for those prone to recurrent infections, seasonal illness or reduced immune resilience after periods of stress or exhaustion.

Lung Capacity

Tui Na increases lung capacity and supports respiratory function through work on specific thoracic and dorsal points linked to the Lung meridian. It is particularly indicated for people with chronic respiratory conditions, reduced breathing depth or frequent shortness of breath.

Musculoskeletal Structure

Tui Na strengthens and realigns the musculoskeletal structure — releasing muscle tension, improving joint mobility and promoting connective tissue repair. It is highly effective in conditions such as neck and back pain, frozen shoulder, sciatica, repetitive strain injuries and post-surgical rehabilitation.

Indications

Who Can Benefit from Tui Na?

Tui Na is suitable for a wide range of people and conditions. At Five Clinic, we see consistent results across these areas:

Pain Management

Chronic and acute pain conditions — back pain, neck pain, headaches, migraines, sciatica, joint pain and neuropathic pain. Tui Na addresses both the local symptom and its energetic root cause.

Stress & Burnout

Chronic stress, anxiety, mental exhaustion and burnout. Tui Na regulates the nervous system, reduces cortisol and creates a profound sense of restoration that goes beyond ordinary relaxation.

Sports Recovery

Accelerated recovery between training sessions, prevention and treatment of sports injuries, reduction of post-exercise muscle soreness, and improved flexibility and joint mobility.

Digestive Health

Irritable bowel syndrome, bloating, constipation, slow digestion and other functional digestive conditions. Abdominal Tui Na protocols directly regulate Spleen and Stomach Qi.

Sleep Disorders

Insomnia, disturbed sleep and difficulty falling asleep. Tui Na calms the Shen (spirit), regulates the Heart and Kidney meridians, and restores the conditions for deep, restorative sleep.

Paediatrics

Paediatric Tui Na is a specialised, needle-free approach for children — highly effective for colic, digestive issues, recurrent infections, sleep difficulties and developmental support. Safe from birth.

Scientific Validation

What Research Confirms

The World Health Organisation recognises Traditional Chinese Medicine — including Tui Na — as a complete medical system, with an established body of evidence supporting its clinical use. Modern research continues to document its physiological mechanisms and therapeutic outcomes.

Musculoskeletal Pain

A systematic review published in the Journal of Pain Research confirmed that Tui Na significantly reduces chronic neck and lower back pain, with outcomes comparable to physiotherapy and superior to passive rest. The combination of Tui Na with acupuncture produced the strongest results.

Nervous System Regulation

Research published in Evidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine demonstrated that Tui Na activates the parasympathetic nervous system, lowers cortisol and reduces sympathetic tone — explaining its profound effects on stress, anxiety and sleep quality.

Paediatric Efficacy

Multiple Chinese clinical studies and reviews confirm the safety and efficacy of paediatric Tui Na for functional digestive disorders, recurrent respiratory infections and sleep disturbances in children — with no adverse effects reported in appropriately trained practitioners.

Circulatory Benefits

Studies confirm that Tui Na improves local and systemic microcirculation, accelerates lactic acid clearance from muscles, and promotes lymphatic drainage — making it a clinically valuable tool in sports medicine, post-surgical rehabilitation and lymphoedema management.

The Session

What to Expect at Your Session

At Five Clinic, every Tui Na session begins with a brief TCM assessment to understand your specific condition and energetic pattern. Treatment is always performed fully clothed, without oils or lotions — making it accessible and practical for any context. Sessions typically last between 45 and 60 minutes.

Step 1 · Assessment

TCM Diagnosis and Personalised Protocol

Tongue observation, pulse palpation and conversation about your current condition, medical history and lifestyle. From this assessment, we identify your specific TCM pattern and design a Tui Na protocol targeting both the presenting symptom and its underlying energetic imbalance.

Step 2 · Treatment

Tui Na — Performed Clothed, Without Oils

The therapist applies a sequence of techniques — pressing, rolling, kneading, stretching, rocking and percussion — along the relevant meridians and at key acupuncture points. Pressure and depth are always adapted to your constitution and tolerance. At Five Clinic, Tui Na is frequently combined with acupuncture or laser acupuncture for enhanced therapeutic synergy.

Step 3 · After Care

Personalised Guidance and Yang Sheng Recommendations

At the end of each session, we provide practical guidance tailored to your diagnosis — dietary recommendations from Chinese dietetics, movement advice, sleep hygiene and Yang Sheng lifestyle practices that support and prolong the therapeutic effect between sessions.

Method

The Five Clinic Approach

At Five Clinic, Tui Na is practised as a genuine therapeutic medicine — not as a wellness amenity. Every session is built on a rigorous TCM diagnosis, and every protocol is adapted to the individual’s constitution, condition, and therapeutic goals. There are no generic protocols.

We believe in the complementarity of tradition and innovation. Our practitioners combine classical Tui Na techniques with the most current evidence in integrative medicine, offering a truly modern approach to an ancient healing art. Where clinically appropriate, Tui Na is integrated with acupuncture, laser acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine for a complete, multi-layered therapeutic programme.

All our specialists hold professional licences certified by ACSS and specialist training in Tui Na and Traditional Chinese Medicine. Our clinic is officially registered with the Health Regulatory Authority (ERS) under number 39558/E166752. Clinical Director: Dr. Fernando Fernandes — Chinese Medicine Licence No. C-006569 and Acupuncture Licence No. C-0500378 (ACSS).
