Therapeutic System

Discover the Techniques of Chinese Medicine

A millennia-old medical system with multiple therapeutic approaches

What Is Acupuncture?

+

Acupuncture — perhaps the best-known technique of Traditional Chinese Medicine — involves inserting very fine, single-use sterile needles into specific points on the body for therapeutic or preventive purposes.

By stimulating specific points (acupoints) located along the meridians, acupuncture promotes the release of neurotransmitters. Endorphins, which have analgesic properties, are among the substances released, explaining acupuncture's effectiveness in pain management.

This ancient Chinese technique — also recognised in the Western world as a first-line treatment for pain — is equally effective for musculoskeletal, neurological, respiratory, gastrointestinal and dermatological conditions.

Acupuncture can also support the treatment of obesity, depression, stress, anxiety, insomnia, and smoking cessation.

What Is Chinese Herbal Medicine?

+

Chinese Herbal Medicine — like acupuncture — is a practice of Traditional Chinese Medicine. It involves the study of medicinal plants and their therapeutic applications for treating illness and maintaining health. It is one of the oldest therapeutic practices in human history.

In China, it dates back to around 3000 BC, when the properties of Ginseng and Camphor were first documented.

Plants contain active compounds capable of treating numerous conditions, and it is from the recognition of these therapeutic properties that medicinal plants have been used both in traditional and conventional medicine.

What Is Tui Na Massage?

+

Tui Na Massage is one of the core techniques of Traditional Chinese Medicine. It is used to relieve pain, improve circulation, treat musculoskeletal disorders and promote overall health.

Tui Na means "push and grasp", and its techniques manipulate the muscles and soft tissues of the body using pressure, gliding, friction and percussion to relieve muscular tension and improve circulation.

It may also include cupping therapy, which uses suction cups to promote circulation, and acupressure techniques applied to specific points on the body.

Tui Na is widely used in Chinese Medicine for back pain, neck pain, leg pain, musculoskeletal disorders, stress, anxiety and insomnia.

What Is Chinese Dietary Therapy?

+

Chinese Dietary Therapy is a practice of Traditional Chinese Medicine that uses specific foods to balance vital energy and treat health conditions. Food is considered to have medicinal properties, and each food — according to its characteristics — can affect different organs and body systems.

It is based on the balance between the five flavours (bitter, sweet, pungent, sour and salty) and the five energies (hot, warm, neutral, cool and cold) of foods.

According to the patient's physiology, the season and their environment, Chinese Medicine practitioners personalise their dietary recommendations accordingly.

What Are Body Practices and Meditation?

+

Body and meditative practices are part of Traditional Chinese Medicine and are used to balance vital energy and support health. Body practices include techniques such as Qi Gong and Tai Chi (a gentle martial art).

They combine slow, gentle movements, deep breathing and meditation to improve energy circulation, strengthen body and mind, and promote overall health.

Body and meditative practices are considered an important component of Chinese Medicine and are frequently used as complementary treatment for pain, stress, anxiety, insomnia and physical and mental health conditions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Questions About Traditional Chinese Medicine

Answers to your most common questions

Does acupuncture hurt?

+
Most people feel only a very slight sensation when the needles are placed. Acupuncture needles are extremely fine — approximately 0.20mm in diameter, far thinner than injection needles. The experience is generally well tolerated and patients often relax deeply during treatment. Many people fall asleep during the session.

How many sessions will I need?

+
The number of sessions varies according to the nature of the imbalance and your body's response to treatment. Acute conditions may improve in 3 to 6 sessions, while chronic conditions typically benefit from an initial course of 8 to 12 sessions followed by maintenance as needed. At your first appointment, following the Chinese Medicine diagnosis, your therapist will develop a personalised plan and share a realistic estimate with you.

Is Chinese Medicine recognised in Portugal?

+
Yes. Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine have been regulated in Portugal by ACSS since 2013. Practitioners must hold valid professional licences issued by this authority. At Five Clinic, all our specialists hold these licences, and the clinic is officially registered with the Health Regulatory Authority (ERS). Internationally, the World Health Organisation (WHO) recognises Traditional Chinese Medicine as a valid and holistic medical system.

What is the investment for a consultation?

+
The value varies according to the type of treatment, session duration and complexity of the care plan. At Five Clinic, each consultation includes assessment time, personalised treatment and ongoing support. For detailed information on pricing and treatment packages, we invite you to contact us directly by phone (+351 217 576 038) or WhatsApp (+351 937 894 736), or to book an initial diagnostic consultation.

Does acupuncture have side effects or contraindications?

+
Acupuncture is considered very safe when performed by properly qualified practitioners. Adverse effects are rare and generally mild — they may include minor bruising at the needle site or a temporary feeling of tiredness after the first session (a sign that the body is adjusting). When they occur, these symptoms are transient and resolve quickly. Contraindications are uncommon and will be assessed at your initial consultation.

Can I receive acupuncture if I am on medication?

+
In most cases, yes. Chinese Medicine can be used alongside conventional medication. It is important to inform your therapist of all medication you are taking and of any medical follow-up you have. In some situations, acupuncture may contribute to a gradual reduction in dependence on certain medications — something that should always be coordinated with your supervising physician.

What happens at the first consultation?

+
The first consultation lasts approximately 60 minutes and includes: a detailed conversation about your health, medical history and lifestyle; tongue observation and radial pulse palpation (Chinese Medicine diagnostic methods); explanation of the diagnosis from a TCM perspective; presentation of the proposed treatment plan; and the first acupuncture treatment. The goal is not only to understand your symptoms, but to identify the energetic pattern underlying them — allowing us to treat the root cause of the imbalance.
